The Oxford Classical Dictionary, 3rd edn., edited by Simon Hornblower and Antony Spawforth (Oxford and New York: Oxford University Press, 2003) provides an excellent single-volume encyclopaedia of the classical world.
Herodotus’s work can be read in many good English translations. The Histories also appears in the Loeb Classical Library series in four volumes, with Greek text on the left and English translation by A. D. Godley on the right (Cambridge, MA, and London, 1920–5).
An enormous amount has been written on Herodotus in English alone. I list here some books and articles that I think would deepen readers’ understanding of Herodotus and his times. Inevitably, some of these works contain a bit of Greek, sometimes in Greek font and sometimes transliterated, but they can nonetheless be read with profit by the Greekless reader.
